Does the new prince's name have you intrigued? Do the numbers have you convinced it's time to give George a chance? Maybe the name draws you in, but you think it's too boring or old. The most recent UK Birth Announcement post from British Baby Names has inspired me to come up with combos to make George come alive! (I am so in love with George Oliver, by the way.) You could go classic, like the prince himself, or you could go modern to give it a new twist. You could use the opportunity to honor a family member, you could use Biblical names or words or places, or you could go all out fun. With all of the new Georges inevitably arriving in the coming months, I am excited to see what parents come up with!

Ode to George

Now that we know the Prince of Cambridge's name, I have had several people ask me if I think George will skyrocket in popularity. My short answer is, "Since it is currently on the decrease, I think it may rise a bit, but not make a huge jump." I'm never quite confident in my predictions though, so we'll see.

Let's take a look at the history of George in the United States. When records began in 1880, George was ranked #5, with 4.3294% of boys born given the name. It was ranked #4 or #5 from 1880 until 1912, and then it was still in the Top 10 until 1937. Since then, it has very slowly decreased in popularity until finally dropping out of the Top 100 in 1993. Currently, it's still in the Top 200, but is at its lowest rank ever at #166.

George stuck around when other "old" names didn't. In fact, if you look at the Top 100 from 1880, George stayed in the Top 100 longer than 82 of the other names. Ten of those 82 names returned to the Top 100 after absences (Henry, Jesse, Benjamin, Jacob, Isaac, Oliver, Alexander, Jack, Stephen and Alex), but George lasted longer than their initial run. Only John, William, James, Charles, Joseph, Thomas, Robert, Edward, Samuel, David, Richard, Andrew, Daniel, Peter, Michael, Paul and Patrick lasted/are lasting longer than George. That is tremendous company and the reason why George is considered a classic and steady name.

A lot of people refer to the British kings, the Presidents Bush, Gershwin, Clooney, and/or several other notables as pluses or minuses in using the name George. I think that George is strong in its own right and doesn't need any reference to any celebrity or politician to make it useful. With so many credentials, it's hard to pin down just one from which to judge. Therefore, future parents should consider the name unabashedly. Because of its classic nature, boys/men with the name George make it their own from almost the immediate moment you meet them.

George Alexander Louis

The waiting has finally ended. I feel like I've been on the edge of my seat ever since Duchess Catherine's pregnancy was announced. I was completely off in my guess (Arthur Frederick Charles Michael), but I am pleased with the name. It's no surprise that I love George and am so glad it's the first name. I personally have never been a huge fan of the name Alexander, but it's a fine name and a great royal name. And Louis caught me by surprise, but I love it and glad they used a name from William's name (though I would have preferred Arthur). I think my only "disappointment" is that there is no fourth name. :)

I saw a picture of Nicole Richie with her children, Harlow and Sparrow, and wondered how hard it would be to come up with another "ends in -w" name if they had any more. I mean, how many "ends in -w" names can there be? Thus the search began!

In comparison to other letters, there really aren't that many names including the letter "w" and even fewer that end with it. The following is what I found...

Ode to Catherine

With everyone waiting for the arrival of the royal baby, and the announcement of his/her name, I wanted to fill the meantime with thoughts on the name of the woman who is carrying the future king or queen... Catherine. Concentrating not so much on the background and meaning of the name, but on the popularity of its different spellings in the United States.

Catherine was the top spelling when records began in 1880, ranking at #31. It has also held the name's highest ranking ever at #18 in 1914 and 1917. It fell out of the Top 100 in 1998, reentered it the following year, and then fell out again in 2002. It currently sits at #167.

Katherine ranked at #53 in 1880 and has never ranked below #105, which it did in 1938. It's highest ranking was #25 in 1991 and it is currently the highest ranked spelling, sitting at #64. If you take a look at the final analysis of my "Where Are They Now" series, Katherine is considered a "roller-coaster name" in that it has had a series of rises and dips over the years.

Kathryn ranked at #103 in 1880. It has never been as popular as Catherine and Katherine, with the highest ranking of #45 coming in 1951, but it's consistently been in the Top 300. It currently sits at it's lowest rank at #266. Many argue that Kathryn has one less syllable than Catherine and is therefore a different name, but since I pronounce them the same, I'm including it in the mix.

Katharine ranked at #172 in 1880. It has only decreased in popularity since then, finally falling out of the Top 1000 after 2006.

Catharine ranked at #296 in 1880. It rose to #251 in 1881, but fell from there, leaving the Top 1000 for good after 1966.

Given Name or Nickname: Cricket

There was a boy in my daughter's class last year named Christian. One day, Rachel excitedly told me that he was called Cricket by his family, friends and teachers. Hearing this made me absolutely fall in love with the nickname. And now actress Busy Philipps has named her newborn daughter Cricket Pearl. I think I would rather use a more formal name and use Cricket as a nickname, but I am not against the idea of just naming my child Cricket either. It has slowly become my new favorite animal name.

When we hear "cricket", we probably think of the animal first, or possibly even the conscience-driven character of Jiminy Cricket. Looking elsewhere, the ball and stick game of cricket is widely known and popular in several countries, and I've actually already mentioned the name in a post about card games. Besides the adorable cuteness of the word as a name, any of these could be a true source of inspiration for parents.

So, how often has Cricket been used as a given name? It was first recorded in 1950 with five girls given the name, and in 1982 there were 24 girls given the name (the most in any year to date). In 2012, it was only given to five girls, and I wonder if there will be a slight jump with the celebrity exposure. As for boys, while I do love the Cricket nickname on a young lad, there hasn't been a record of more than five boys given the name in any year since 1880.

If you just can't embrace Cricket as a given name, but want the opportunity to use it as a nickname for your child, what are your formal name options? The soap opera The Young and the Restless has a character called Cricket whose real name is Christine. Any other Chri-/Cri- name would work well, such as:

Pacific Rim

My husband was watching an extended preview for the movie Pacific Rim last night and what caught my eye was not the amazing graphics of huge robots and monsters, but the names of the actors and characters in the movie. There are some GREAT finds in this one...

Characters
Raleigh - The main character is a Jaeger (the huge robot) pilot with a relatively low-used place name. While the character in the movie is male, Raleigh was given to more girls than boys in 2012, 107 to 81.

Yancy - Raleigh's brother, Yancy is a name from a surname. Yancy was given to 10 boys and 9 girls in 2012.

Stacker - Stacker Pentecost is the commanding officer in the movie. I cannot find any use of this name in the United States, but it is definitely a standout name.

Mako - Mako is a female co-pilot. The name is Japanese and means "child of truth". It is also a type of shark, and while Mako is usually a girl's name in Japan, it is also given to boys and was given to 7 boys in the US in 2012.

Newton - Newton is the perfect name for a scientist character in the movie. The name is a surname, most widely known from Sir Isaac Newton. Newton was given to 15 boys in 2012.

Hermann - Hermann is another scientist character. The name is the German form of Herman, and while Herman was given to 63 boys in 2012, Hermann was not on record.

Herc - Herc is another pilot in the movie. I cannot find any use of this name in the US, but I wonder if it's short for Hercules, which was given to 6 boys in 2012.

Hannibal - Hannibal is a black marketeer who actually took his name from the historical Carthaginian military commander. We also know of the name from Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Dr. Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Hannibal was given to 13 boys in 2012.

Sasha - Sasha is a Russian female character in the movie, but the name's roots are as a nickname for the Russian Aleksander. 687 girls were named Sasha in 2012.

Aleksis - Aleksis is another pilot in the movie. It a Slavic name, with similar roots to Alexander. There is no record of its use in the US, however there were 1,552 boys given the name Alexis in 2012.

Tendo - Tendo is a Chinese-American Jaeger technician in the movie, but all I can find on the name is Japanese. There is no record of its use in the US.

Actors
Idris - Idris is a Welsh name that has popularity in England/Wales and France. It was given to 137 boys in 2012.

Rinko - Rinko is a Japanese actress who was born Yuriko, which is a common Japanese name that means "lily". Neither name was recorded as used in 2012.

Burn - Burn is obviously a word name, and this actor was born in the United States, but I cannot find any recorded use of it in the US.

Clifton - Clifton is a surname that was used more often in the late 1800s and early 1900s. It has since fallen out of the Top 1000, but was given to 129 boys in 2012.

Can we also talk about what the huge robots are caled? Jaeger or Jäger (yay-gur) is German for "hunter" and would pass as a very cool name, much like Jagger. Some parents must agree... it was given to 30 boys in 2012.

I know Virginia could be put in the Place Name category, but I just love it so much as an "Oldie But Goodie" I had to put it there (and hope it will make a comeback soon).

Only Victoria and Violet make the US Top 100 in 2012, at #28 and #89 respectively. 17 However, 100 years ago, in 1912, Virginia (#20), Viola (#52), Vera (#68), Vincent (#72), Victor (#81), Violet (#83), Vivian (#84), Velma (#88), and Vernon (#90) all made the Top 100. In 2012, 17 other V names reached the Top 1000, while over 30 more reached it in 1912, including Verna, Virgie, Vesta, Vern, Velva, Vernice, Velda, Vina, Verla, Vester, and Vella. Note: There were over 27,000 fewer births in 1912 than in 2012. In any case, where have all the good V's gone?

This week is the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. It was the bloodiest ever fought on US soil and ended up being the turning point in the Civil War in favor of the Union. Over 165,000 soldiers participated in the battle that lasted three days from July 1-3, 1863, and over a fourth of them were killed, wounded or captured/missing. Those killed in the battle were honored over four months later at the dedication of the Gettysburg National Cemetery, where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous Gettysburg Address.
